Website Checklists

Web design is all about the little things. There are a number of things that you can forget while creating a website.

To make sure nothing is missed, we use checklists. This checklist includes items from years of hard-earned experiences, mistakes, and lessons learned.

All the websites that we create we go through our checklist to ensure nothing is forgotten.

WordPress Prestart Checklist

The Prestart Checklist is getting the website ready to start work, it is important to set everything right and have all the correct tools to do the website right and efficiently.

It is always good to set to the root directory, that way internal link URL’s can flow easily

Important to use a different username other than admin / password

Update the robots.txt in your root directory with the following code User-agent: * Disallow: /
  1. Log in to WordPress as the administrator.
  2. Under Dashboard, click Settings, and then click General.
  3. Scroll down to the Timezone list box, and then select the time zone you want WordPress to use to display the time. …
  4. In the Week Starts On list box, select the day that begins the week in your region.
  5. Click Save Change

There are absolutely no SEO benefits of choosing one over another. Even Google has said that it all depends on your preference.

It is important that you stay consistent with the one that you chose at the time of starting your website.

From the WordPress dashboard, just click Settings General.

By default, the front page of your WordPress site will display latest posts from your blog. If you would like to create a more traditional website, you can set a static “home” page instead.

  1. Log in to WordPress as the administrator.
  2. Under Dashboard, click Settings, and then click Reading.
  3. Under Your home page displays chose a static page and select the page.
  4. Click Save Change

Remove default content in Post and Pages, also empty trash.

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts, as well as your category and tag archives. A permalink is the web address used to link to your content. The URL to each post should be permanent and never change — hence the name permalink.

The Settings > Permalinks Screen allows you to choose your default permalink structure. You can choose from common settings or create custom URL structures. You must click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen for new settings to take effect.

A good setup up is:

Post name – An example of the post name structure is http://www.sample.com/sample-post

Make a list of plugins that the website will require and install these such as

 Elementor Pro

 Caldera Forms

 Easy Google Fonts

 Site Origin CSS

 WP Show More

 Yoast SEO

 Kadence Theme Pro

It is important to set the Theme colours and fonts throuout the website. It is important that everything is consitant and flows through.

WordPress Pre Launch Checklist

The Pre Launch Checklist is checking all the website design details before making the website live on the internet. It is important to have everything set up right so there are fewer amendments later on.

favicon (short for “favorite icon”) is an icon associated with a website or webpage intended to be used when you bookmark the web page. Web browsers use them in the URL bar, on tabs, and elsewhere to help identify a website visually. Also, it is used as application icon of mobile device.

Follow the below steps to set favicon in your site.

  1. Prepare image file. It must be square, and at least 512 pixels wide and tall.
  2. Go to Administration Screen > Appearance > Customize
  3. Click Site Identify
  4. Click Select Image at Site Icon section, upload the image file you prepared in the above step from Upload Files tab screen, and click Select.

Set CSS-ID attributes to important sections that you want to appear in your table of Contents, read more about Section Anchor Links

Within the plugin Yoast SEO

By default, Yoast SEO does not enable XML sitemap functionality, so you will have to turn it on. To do that go to SEO » Features and check the box to enable XML sitemap functionality.

Alt text (also known as alt tags and alternative text) are attributes of an image in the HTML of your web page. Alt text are words that describe the image.

  • Be Descriptive – Think about how to explain the photo to another person over the phone.
  • Be Concise – Approximately 125 characters or 3-8 words, maximum.
  • Avoid Keyword Stuffing – No extra fluff or phrases that don’t match the image.
  • Don’t Include – Avoid “image of” or “photo of” in the alt tags. It’s assumed.
  • Buttons – Don’t forget alt text for buttons. Keep these simple like “sign up” or “buy”.

Navigate to your Media Library and access “Attachment Details”.

In WordPress, this Title is used within the content management system to help organize your media. It is not the same as the Image Title attribute more commonly utilized on the web. An Image Title is displayed as a popup when a user hovers over the image. We don’t recommend investing in this field for SEO purposes, but it is nice to use it should you wish to add the hover state functionality to your website. To access the Image Title in WordPress, edit the image and select advanced options. Add your image title to the “Image Title Attribute” field.

Check the menu and all links are working within.

With Elementor Pro, updating the 404 page is easy.

From the WordPress dashboard, just click Elementor My Templates.

Select the 404 template

Elementor Pro by default automatically links the Company Logo to Homepage, it is important to check this functionality
