What makes good SEO?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization” It is the process of getting traffic from the unpaid search results.
It is estimated that there are 200 Google ranking factors.  We have listed the top 10 SEO ranking factors that are relevant in 2019. Generally speaking, websites will take 4 – 6 months before seeing results from implementing our top 10 SEO techniques.

1. Unique Content & Keywords

Google loves to see content that does not appear anywhere else on the internet. If the content is not unique and other websites have the same content then your search rankings will decrease. It is important that your content is logical and you explain things the way you understand them. An excellent free website to check if your content is unique is copyscape.com, alternatively, you can copy and paste paragraphs into Google search to see what websites appear with that information.

When writing your content, it is good to use keywords and words that relate to your keywords, however do not make the content feel forced with keywords. It needs to be easy to read and understand. Read More about Keywords and SEO.

If you ever used an external website to find information or collate data, then it is a good idea to link to the website you got your information from. Google’s AI will look at your webpage and if it is well written and it links to credible external sources it will give it a higher page rank. It is important to note that Google will penalise web page rank of linking to poor content or content not related to your webpage content.

It is important that you link to all your website pages in a structured logical way so users visiting your website can easily find the page without too much difficulty. If your webpage has a lot of information it is a good idea to create links to different sections of the page. This way Google can create different snippets on your website and link the relevant section. Read More on How to Create Links to Sections on the Same Page in WordPress.

3. Mobile Phone Friendly

In 2019 there are more mobile devices than desktops. More searches are done by mobile phone than any other device. It is logical that the website should be optimised for a mobile phone as well as a desktop/laptop device. In fact, Google announced starting from late 2016 that if you are to search on Google through your mobile phone it would show you results of websites that are optimised for a mobile phone first and then the ones that are desktop optimised.

4. Page Speed

5. Website Security

It is important that your website is secure and using https protocol. Google ranks websites that use https protocol higher than websites that do not. If your website has been compromised by a hacker google will block access to your website.

6. Image SEO

It is always better to use photos that you have taken yourself rather than stock photos available on the internet. Google’s Artificial Intelligence will know if you use a stock photo or an actual photo that you have taken yourself. It is even better if you optimise the photo by cropping, adjusting colours and reducing the file size to load quicker. It is important to name the file a description of the actual photo or graphic instead of the standard file name that appears from your camera. The alt text should have a similar description, however not every image needs to have an alt text, only the ones where you would like to know what they are if you were to browse your website with a text-only browser.

7. Google My Business

If you do not have a great website, then this ranking feature would be higher on the list. The main prerequisite is that you will need a physical address so Google can send a verification letter to. PO BOX is not allowed. Once verified your business information will rank higher for local search results. Read More about how to set up a Google My Business Page

<meta name=”description” content=”Description Meta Tag”>

10. Domain Name

Google favours brand awareness in search rankings this means that the domain name should be the same as your business name or brand name. As we are located in Australia it should end with .com.au as it will help users automatically associate the website as Australian.
