How to choose a domain name for your Australian website

Choose a domain your customers can recognise, say aloud and type confidently. For an Australian website, consider the audience, the name’s availability and the eligibility rules for your preferred ending.

Start with your business or brand

A recognisable name helps customers connect your website, email and business. Keep it short enough to remember and avoid confusing spellings. Adding keywords to a domain is not a shortcut to better rankings.

Choose an ending that suits your audience

A .com.au or .net.au name can suit an eligible Australian commercial entity. .au direct is available to applicants with a verified Australian presence, while .org.au has separate not-for-profit eligibility requirements. Check the rules with your registrar before registering.

.com is a generic domain ending used internationally, not an American-only address. It can suit a business with an international audience. The best choice depends on recognition, availability and your plans.

Choose for usefulness, not domain age

Do not buy an older domain simply because it has been registered longer. If considering an existing name, investigate its previous use and reputation. The domain itself cannot replace useful content and a well-maintained website.

If your preferred name is already registered

Try a clear variation or another suitable ending before considering a purchase from the current holder. Check business names and trade marks to avoid confusing customers. A registered domain does not by itself give you rights to someone else’s brand.

Consider .net.au and .au alternatives

.net.au is a legitimate Australian commercial namespace. .au direct can offer a shorter option. Consider whether customers could confuse the name with an existing business using a similar address. Choose a distinctive, memorable option rather than a long string of keywords.

Keep spelling straightforward

Hyphens and numbers are allowed in many domain names, but can be awkward to explain over the phone. Prefer a name that is easy to say and type. Read the words together to check for unintended meanings.

Use one main website address

Extra domains can be useful for brand protection or common spelling variations. If you use them, redirect visitors to the main website rather than maintaining identical copies. Duplicate content is not automatically a Google penalty, but consistent addresses and redirects help avoid confusion.

Make the name easy to manage

Use an acronym only if your audience recognises it. Register the domain with the correct business details, keep renewal contacts current and make sure the business retains access to the registrar account.
